Lightweight is an important trend in the development of aerospace materials. The advantages of reducing the mass of the fuselage and various parts are obvious: it can reduce fuel consumption, increase load, extend aircraft flight time, and reduce flight costs. The data shows that for every 1 pound of aerospace material reduction, the cost of commercial aircraft can be reduced by 300 dollars; fighter jets can be reduced by 3,000 dollars; and spacecraft can be reduced by 30,000 dollars. This shows that the lightweight of aerospace materials has an important impact on the cost of spacecraft. In addition, while saving costs, the reduced mass of high-speed aircraft can also greatly reduce inertia and improve flight performance. The density of magnesium is 1.74 g/cm3. Adding some alloying elements to magnesium to form magnesium alloy is still the lightest among many aerospace metal materials. It is only equivalent to the density of engineering plastics, but its strength and stiffness are much higher than engineering plastics. Therefore, if magnesium alloys can be widely used in aerospace, it will bring huge weight reduction benefits and cost savings.

Magnesium has good machinability, which means good casting properties. Compared with other materials, its manufacturing cost is very low, as shown in Table 4. It is worth noting that although the price per kilogram of magnesium ingot is a little more expensive than that of aluminum and iron, its finished product price per unit volume is almost the same.
The physicochemical properties of magnesium make it more suitable than aluminum for die casting large components. The latent heat of fusion per unit volume of magnesium is only 2/3 of that of aluminum, the specific heat is only 3/4 of that of aluminum, and it has very low iron solubility. These properties allow magnesium die castings to achieve almost the same production cost per kilogram as aluminum. If the highly productive HOT RUNNER technology (such as the latest achievement of THIXOMAT) is applied, the production cost of magnesium die-cast parts is much lower than that of aluminum.
